Project Overview

Working with the Multisensory Brand Innovation & Strategy team, we looked to take work conducted into the Mastercard Circlebands to new heights. Primarily, to reduce the size of the most recent iteration and to make it distinctly Mastercard. A key goal was to create something unique and distinctly Mastercard while staying true to the circleband requirements and capabilities.

What Is The Circleband?

Designed primarily to enhance the experience of event goers, the circleband is a physical device which can be used to make payments (Personal Transactions) as well as providing real time visual and haptic feedback to event goers (Crowd Activation).

Requirements

In keeping with the Mastercard brand requirements, there were a number of key design factors which needed to be adhered to for the redesign of the Circleband.

Designing Around the Printed Circuit Board (PCB)

A key part of the physical module design hinged upon understanding both the dimensions, tolerences and additional requirements of the PCB. Something which was a necessity to delivering the enhanced experience provided by the circleband.

Landscape Analysis

as part of the initial research conducted, an analysis of the event wristband landscape was carried out. These were grouped into key areas of strength and any emerging trends which were uncovered. Interviews with previous users of event wristbands was also conducted.

Design, Iterate, Print

Accounting for all product requirements, limits, landscape analysis and user research, thus began the design and iteration phase. Multiple designs were sketched out by the team, and ultimately a large number were brought to life in 3d renders and printed in a 1:1 scale to test fit across a variety of wrist sizes.

The Chosen Design

Following additional testing and feedback sessions, a final design to take forward to the manufacturer was selected. A number of factors contributed to the overall decision to go with a design, that ultimately would be multipurpose allowing users a choice in wearing the module as either a wristband or a lanyard attachment.
